The awake estimate is the complement of the same population-weighted sleeping model: world population minus people estimated to be sleeping.
What the number means
People estimated to be awake, calculated as the world population minus the sleeping estimate. Daily routines vary with age, work, culture, access and household patterns. The number is a broad modelled estimate, not direct tracking of individuals.
This estimate is for curiosity and perspective. Activities can overlap, and the totals should not be added together as if every category were exclusive.
What changes this estimate?
The total increases as large population regions reach morning and decreases as they enter local sleeping hours. It therefore moves in the opposite direction from Sleeping.
Awake is a derived counter, not a separate survey. Every person not represented by the sleeping model is included in this complement.
