How this online estimate works

Country shares are allocated using country population × ITU/World Bank 2024 Internet penetration, calibrated to that total. 92% daily use, eight active hours, and the hourly curve are assumptions, not live connection data. Country population is interpolated between UN projection dates. IANA local time and regional weekend conventions drive the simulation. Borrowed timing and behavioural coefficients are not local measurements.

People likely to be actively using an internet-connected service. Device access, platform reach, age and simultaneous media use vary widely between regions. The number is a broad modelled estimate, not direct tracking of individuals.
This estimate is for curiosity and perspective. Activities can overlap, and the totals should not be added together as if every category were exclusive.

ITU estimates that 6.0 billion people used the internet in 2025, while about 2.2 billion people remained offline.
Is an internet user the same as someone online right now?
No. Internet-user statistics cover use during a survey reference period. The current counter estimates simultaneous active use and is therefore lower.
Access is not the same as activity
How many people use the internet worldwide?
ITU estimates that 6.0 billion people used the internet in 2025. The live number above is smaller because it models which internet users are actively online at this moment, weighted by local waking hours.
Why the two numbers differ
“Internet users” describes people who used the internet during a survey reference period. “Online right now” is a concurrent activity estimate. Accounts, devices, subscriptions and current people must not be added together.
What changes this estimate?
Active use follows local waking and evening hours. Connectivity, device access, multi-device use and the difference between access and active use limit precision.
Online means a person actively using an internet-connected service. Always-connected devices and inactive background connections are not counted as people online.
Being online is broader than a specific activity. Compare the separate assumptions for YouTube viewing and video gaming right now; do not add their counts to the online total.
