How the live estimate works

Annual carbon budget → current flow

Global Carbon Budget 2025 projects global fossil CO₂ emissions of 38.1 gigatonnes for 2025. The current display divides that annual quantity across a tropical year.

38.1 billion tonnes ÷ 365.2425 days ÷ 86,400 seconds

The resulting average is about 1,207 tonnes per second. Applying the 2025 average to the present is an explicit holding assumption, not a claim that final 2026 emissions are known.

Uncertainty

Projection and baseline limits remain visible

The study’s 2025 growth projection is 1.0%, with a 0.2%–1.7% range. Its consolidated 2024 fossil estimate is 37.8 ± 1.8 GtCO₂.

Scope: coal, oil, gas, cement, flaring and other fossil sources. Net land-use change is reported separately by the research team.

No. The headline is fossil CO₂. Global Carbon Budget estimates land-use-change emissions separately.

Why use a constant rate?

It makes the annual-to-second conversion transparent. A credible hourly global curve would require a separate near-real-time emissions dataset.
